Because C.Crane Company does not make SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker I would like to thank them for sending me this to review. Without their support this review would not be possible. People listen to music when they go to sleep for many reasons. Some like the soothing sounds that help them relax. Others, with restless minds, like their mind to focus on music rather than the events of the day. I am one of the latter. I can lay in bed for hours going over the days activities or the activities of future days. In the past, I had to force myself to think of nothing so that I could actually go to sleep. Now, with a pillow speaker, I can instead focus on music and fall asleep much quicker.
- Neodymium-Ferrous-Boron Speaker
- 20Hz to 20,000Hz Frequency Response
- First High Fidelity Pillow Speaker
- Works with anything that has a headphone jack.
The SoftSpeaker Pillow Speaker is very compact. It weighs only 1.6 oz. and is only 1.9″ in diameter. It is actually about the size of a human ear and it fits very nicely in one. With a very soft cover you are almost guaranteed a comfortable fit.
The cover is made of very soft foam covered in fuzzy, soft fabric. It is almost like the fabric stuffed animals are made from. The cover is washable, so if you have a dirty ear or it just gets dirty over time you can easily remove the speaker and throw the cover in the wash with your other dark clothing.
The speaker is a Neodymium-Ferrous-Boron type with a frequency response range of 20Hz to 20,000Hz. The Neodymium-Ferrous-Boron supposedly makes the speaker sound better. The speaker also has a 6-1/2 foot cord with 1/8″ jack. The cord is made of a very flexible material so that you don’t have to worry about bending it, in case you need to feed it through tight spaces. The jack is the standard size so it will fit in any headphone jack. The cord should be long enough to reach any stereo or other music device that is near your bed.
The SoftSpeaker really is very soft. The fabric and foam are well proportioned so that it prevents you from resting directly on a hard speaker. However, I did discover that if I laid directly on the speaker for too long my ear would get sore. I also don’t sleep on my side very often so a better position, for me, was to lay on my back and have the pillow speaker on my side and then rest my head on the speaker. This was better for me because the full weight of my head was still on my pillow and not on the speaker. It also allowed the sound of the speaker to still go directly into my ear. If you do sleep on your side then it is also possible to take the speaker out of its cover and put it under your pillow and turn up the volume so you can hear it. The only draw back to this is if you sleep with someone else they will probably be able to hear the sound coming from the speaker.
The speaker itself sounds great. Granted 90% of the time you will have a minimal amount of volume coming through the speaker. It does get loud enough to hurt your ear if you really crank it up and you can hear it from several feet away. It is not a loud speaker so you will not be able to hear words or individual instruments from that far away. There is really no bass to speak of, and you cannot expect any from a speaker this small. With a frequency response range of 20Hz to 20,000Hz you will be able to hear most of the music from any song.
Warranty and Support
CCrane warranties this speaker for only one year. Even though this seems to becoming the standard, I still think it is really short. For a speaker, which really has no moving parts, they should cover it for a lifetime. Obviously not covering speakers that are blown out due to loud volumes or damaged due to misuse. The cover is another story, since you are making direct contact with it, it will eventually wear out. I can see one to two years of coverage for this.
I have really seen an improvement in my sleep ever since I started using this speaker. I really have a restless mind that will wander for hours, keeping me awake. I used to have to force my mind to be blank and not think of anything. This was very difficult and took a long time. With some nice music to focus on I am able to fall asleep much quicker and can allow my mind to focus on the music and not wander. This is also very nice for people who don’t have restless minds, but just like to listen to music before they go to sleep. This will help them to not disturb their partner with music that they may not like. The SoftSpeaker only costs $19.99, so it is very affordable. I highly recommend it for anyone in a situation like I described above.
