Day two of CES is now over. I spent the day at the South hall 3 and 4. This area holds companies like Sandisk, Netgear, Magellan, and Creative. Unfortunately, a lot of these companies were not offering anything new that caught my attention. The couple of booths that I did stop by were Asus, Mio, Kodak, and Eton. Eton was showing their line of portable radios that are powered by batteries that can be charged by turning a handle that is attached to the side. This is perfect for an emergency kit because they will work even if there is no power. Kodak showed their first all-in-one printer and several new cameras. At the Asus I was especially interested in the Eee PC. It certainly is a small PC, but I wonder how useful it will be because of the small size. Typing on it would get uncomfortable really quickly. The small screen is hard to see unless you are fairly close and the small amount of storage is going to be a hindrance because you are not going to get much on it. However, this PC and the others like it are not designed for hard core users and so you have to keep that in mind when you look into buying one.
After the show I went by the Microsoft tent for an exclusive look at some of the technology and devices that Microsoft’s software is being used. This was an excellent opportunity to talk to Microsoft about how I felt about some of their software. They were showing off an early copy of IE8 and how it passed the acid2 browser test. It is nice that they are finally taking that seriously. I also got to talk to them about some of the things I did not like about IE7. The main thing I mentioned was the change in the UI and the moving of the navigation buttons and putting the main menu below the address bar. I was told that they did this because of some technical difficulty, that threw me for a loop. What kind of technical difficulty would make you put the menu under the address bar? Anyways they said they would make note of my requests and I should look for them in a future release of the browser.
Once again I enjoyed the day and got to see several great companies and their products. Tomorrow I am going to South hall 1 and 2 and also spend some time in Central hall.
