Laptops are not known for having fast hard drives. Most of the time Laptops have slow 5400 RPM drives, and even when they have a 7200 RPM drive it is usually cheap and slow. This is often because with Laptops the power usage is the #1 concern. The Seagate Momentus line of hard drives offers the best of both worlds, a fast drive and low power usage.
- Highest available notebook performance increases productivity in all environments.
- Developed with proven Seagate 7200-RPM laptop technology
- Available in capacities of 320, 250, 160, 120 and 80 GB
- SATA 3Gb/s NCQ interface
- 16-MB cache on every capacity
- G-Force Protection available for added robustness in mobile environments
- Green features:
- Leverages Seagate laptop power management technology, delivering the lowest-power 7200-RPM laptop hard drive yet
- Utilizes ramp load features which remove the head from the disk during idle periods, improving idle power consumption and adding to the durability of the drive
- QuietStep ramp load technology enables ultra-quiet load/unload acoustics
- Perpendicular recording technology
For a long time desktops had the advantage with hard drives because 7200 RPM drives were not available for laptops or they were really expensive. However, recently 7200 RPM drives have become much more common and less expensive. Having the extra speed that a 7200 RPM drive offers can make life with a laptop much nicer. In addition, this hard drive has 16MB of cache which rivals many desktop class hard drives.
Higher power usage usually goes with higher performance, but not with the Seagate Momentus. The Momentus has some of the lowest power usage in the market. This is made possible with Seagate’s ramp load technology which removes the head from the disk during idle times.
G-Force Protection adds robustness and durability to the hard drive. The Momentus 7200.3 drive can withstand even the most serious of the drops that can happen in a mobile environment. When a laptop is dropped, the most catastrophic damage to the hard drive occurs when the head scrapes across the surface of the disk, causing potential data loss. G-Force Protection protects the hard drive against shock by sensing when the system is in a free-fall state, moving the heads off the platter and locking them in place. All this happens within three-tenths of a second when a change in acceleration equal to the force of gravity is sensed. G-Force Protection results in added durability and reliability during accidental drops.
What is there to say about the design of a hard drive? Well not much, it is small and rectangular. This particular drive is the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 so it also has a SATA 3.0Gb/s connector.
The next design is the inside of the laptop. Since I am upgrading my personal laptop, which is a Toshiba Satellite U305-S5097, it is important to make sure they are compatible. The easiest way to to this is to look at the original specs for the laptop. Mine indicated that it has a SATA drive already in, so I assumed it was compatible.
After flipping my laptop over I was able to easily remove the small cover that is over the hard drive bay. Once that is removed the hard drive easily slips out of the hard drive bay.
There is a small metal cover that needs to be removed from the original hard drive, it only has 4 screws to remove so it comes off easily. The cover then needs to be put on the new drive, this is also very easy.
The two hard drives look almost identical and the connectors for both are identical. This confirms that I can use the new hard drive.
Putting the new hard drive into the hard drive bay was as easy as removing the old one. There are no screws or anything, it just slides right in.
The last thing to do is put the cover back on and power up the laptop.
At this point we would normally have to reinstall the OS and all our applications, this process can take several hours, but I had an advantage. I am using Windows Home Server and I was able to restore my laptops most recent backup. This process took only a few minutes and I was up an running on the new drive with all my programs already installed.
So what kind of performance did I see with the new drive? Here are two screen shots from my laptop. The first image is the performance of the old drive, and the second one is from the new drive.
As you can see from the images, the new hard drive has much better performance.
The Seagate Momentus 7200.3 hard drive comes with a 3 year warranty. This is ok, but not great.
So far I have been extremely happy with the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 hard drive. I have not experianced any problems, the install was very easy, and the performance is great. If you are in need of more space, or speed I can recommend the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 hard drive. I got this drive from NewEgg for only $69.99. So not only did I get a great drive, but I also got it for a low price.
