This article was suppose to be a review of the iPad 2, but because all the stores I went to didn’t have any in stock I am instead writing this article.
I should first start out by saying that Apple certainly does not need me as a customer. They are a very successful company without me as a customer, and they will continue to be successful long after. I am sure they sold millions of iPads on Friday and not having me buy one means nothing to them. However, in addition to not selling me an iPad they also lost a chance to make a convert.
I have never bought an Apple product before, in fact you could say I have been anti-apple, I have gone out of my way to support their competitors even when it meant I had to pay more, or settle for less functionality. Despite this, I was excited about the release of the iPad 2 and I wanted to compare it to the Android tablets I have been reviewing. However, instead of having an iPad to play with today I am left frustrated by Apples inability to meet the demand of their customers. Weather on purpose or not, I don’t know, the simple fact is that when I went to buy an iPad I couldn’t find any.
It is possible that they will restock in a week or two, but if it is anything like the Wii it could take months, or years before they are easily obtainable and I don’t have the attention span to wait that long. Even if I ordered one online it could take a month before they have any to ship. By that time there will be new technology that will have taken away my attention and I will not be interested in the iPad anymore. However, if I had gotten a iPad on Friday it is quite possible that I would have been so blown away with it, that all other tablets would have seemed like silly toys. Now the possibility of that is remote.
So instead of a review I am left with nothing but a sense of disappointment and frustration. If the stores in my area manage to get them in stock soon I may go get one and still do the review. However, I am not going to waist my time calling around all day just to find one. I will probably call a couple stores on Monday, but if I don’t find anything I will move on to other projects and the iPad will be forgotten about.
So to all those who managed to get an iPad 2 on Friday I say congratulations. Please share your experience with us and tell us all about what we are missing. Maybe that will be enough to keep our excitement levels up. Otherwise the rest of us will just look forward to the next big announcement. Personally I am waiting for the Xoom WiFi version and the inevitable price drop. I am also considering a Nook Color that I can root into, what I’ve heard, an awesome tablet.
I finally got my hands on an iPad2 and I posted my review. Go ahead and read it and tell me what you think of my conclusions.
